Mantra, by Jungwon Jay Hur, is a folded large scale print showcasing the artists latest series of etchings.
The nature of her art practice centers around storytelling, inspired by folk music and literature (poems, essays, fiction) combined with her personal memories and experiences.
Mantra is a continuation of Jay’s past and ongoing project of ‘folding screen prints’, where she has printed a series of etchings on Hanji paper as well as ‘Bojagi (a Korean traditional wrapping cloth made from a variety of materials). This larger project is currently in a stage of development where she is creating various scales of patchwork quilt prints that allow her to delve into the idea of ‘home’ - through which she has been unfolding the experience of a diaspora female Asian artist in the UK and re-exploring her native Korean culture that she often overlooked in the past, building a new network of cultural and personal connection.
Jay is fascinated by the emergence of an image through the building of time, and the way each etching plate holds its very own process through a chemical reaction, which always seems so magical.
She depicts images that are the mixture of figures and landscape often in small scale etching plates, and as a collective body they create much bigger narratives through her delicate and thoughtful decisions on the configuration of plates.
